Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup whole milk (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 cups tart apples (peeled and chopped)
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle in yeast and let sit until foamy (5-10 minutes).
  2. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center; add softened butter and activated yeast mixture. Mix to form a soft dough.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Let it Rise: Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size (1-2 hours).
  5. Create Filling: Mix chopped apples with sugar and cinnamon; add nuts if desired.
  6. Roll & Assemble: After rising, punch down the dough and roll into a rectangle. Spread apple filling evenly, then roll tightly into a log.
  7. Twist & Shape: Slice the log lengthwise; twist halves together with cut sides facing up.
  8. Bake: Place in a greased pan; let rise for another 30 minutes while preheating oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
